Book Review: Vicious by V.E. Schwab
You guys! I'm so excited to share Vicious by V.E. Schwab with you! I became interested in this book because of several amazing reviews from booktubers that I subscribe to, but the review from Marianna sealed the deal for me. I got my copy from the Book Depository because they are the only ones (that I could find) that carry this awesome graphic red, black, and white edition. Also, did you know that they offer free worldwide shipping? Pretty awesome.
Anyway! Let me tell you about the premise of this book. Victor and Eli are college roommates, whom during their research for their thesis projects, discover how to give themselves ExtraOrdinary abilities. Somehow, immediately after the discovery they have a falling out, in a serious case of "that escalated quickly". Jump ahead 10 years later... and Victor has broken out of prison. He is on a mission to seek revenge and kill his former best friend.
If that doesn't already make you want to read this book, then I will continue. The writing style of this story is incredibly well done. It follows Victor and Eli in two distinct timelines: 10 years ago, and present day. Victoria (V.E. Schwab) manages to make both of these settings equally interesting and gripping. I was hooked from page 1 of this book and never wanted to set it down. Usually when an author does this back and forth thing between two different timeframes, I find that I enjoy one over the other, but in this case I loved both. Part of what I think makes it so successful is the usage of short chapters, you never spend too long in either of the timelines. Plus, you continuously feel like you can read just one more chapter before setting the book down.
I loved how engaging and gripping the story was. I actually felt really stressed as the story approached the final confrontation between Victor and Eli. The ending was brilliant. I loved all of the side characters. Basically, everything about this book is fricken' great. This should definitely be the next book you read, if you haven't already.
