Book Review: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Book Review: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Le Cirque des Reves (The circus of dreams) is like no other circus you've ever heard of. Erin Morgenstern creates a landscape filled with magic and beauty that kickstarts your imagination as though you are a child again. This beautiful fairytale follows two magical competitors, one of the old magic and one of the new. While they have no idea why they are competing or even how, they do know one thing- the circus. Both are deeply entwined in the making of the ethereal attractions that one might see at this peculiar mysterious circus. Their goal is to out-create each other in this venue which is designed to mystify it's patrons.

Celia, guided by her father and Marco, guided by his mentor prepare their whole lives to outcompete one another. They do not know what the rules of the game are, except that they cannot interfere with each other's creations. The winner survives only by outlasting the other. One must meet their demise for the other to win. Like any good story, this comes only with major consequences. They are so bonded and defined by this life long competition that the idea of being without it is too painful. To further complicate it, the two finally figure out who the other is and because of their bond, they (of course) fall in love with each other. Oy. Right? I won't continue with the plotline, as I don't want to spoil anything but I can tell you this story is NOT predictable.

This story was so beautiful and tragic, I was completely emerged in the descriptions of this world. Audible was my best friend with this book, I loved having it read to me because it allowed me to completely fall into my own imagination. I highly recommend this book, even if you are not into magical/fantasy type novels. It's about life, pain, commitment, dreams, wishing, love and so much more. Anyone can relate to this story and I think we all can use a break from life to dream a little.

If you are looking for a summer read, I highly recommend The Night Circus! If you read it, please let me know, I would love to hear what you think about it. Let me know your book recommendations and I will add them to my goodreads!
