Review: Tea Tree Line from The Body Shop
Lately I've been having some decently clear skin and I'm pretty sure I have these three products to thank for it. Back in July I was going through a rough time with my skin. I kept breaking out and I'm not exactly sure why. After doing a lot of research and reading of reviews I decided to give tea tree oil a shot. The Body Shop has an entire line of products devoted to this acne fighting oil, and at the time everything was 40% off on their website(it is right now as well). I looked through all of their tea tree products and decided to pick up three: the facial wash, the moisturizer and regular old tea tree oil.
The first thing I noticed was that I loved the cooling, tingling sensation that tea tree oil has on the skin. It just feels like it's working. Except... about a week into using them, I broke out even WORSE than I had before. I got a huge painful zit right on my cheek. I thought, Ok... well at least now I can see how the tea tree oil does as a spot treatment. Much to my dismay, the oil did NOT help my zit heal or go away any faster than it would have on it's own. Thankfully, this was around the same time that I picked up the It Cosmetics miracle concealer, so I was able to hide the monstrous thing when I had to go out in public.
Even though I had convinced myself that this breakout was caused by all these new products, I decided to trudge on and keep using them. I started to notice that my skin was suddenly dryer than normal, I had some dry spots where my foundation would noticeably cling, a problem I've never really had before. I realized that maybe I was overdoing it, so I tried cutting back on the usage. I started using the cleanser only at night (with a gentler one in the morning) and alternating the moisturizer with a First Aid Beauty one. Once I started doing this, my skin was suddenly much happier. My dry spots went away and my breakouts ceased. I found that this really is a balancing act. I must have overwhelmed my skin by introducing too many things at once. I haven't had any major breakouts since I changed up how I was using them.
The face cleanser is definitely my favorite of the three. I love how clean my skin feels after using it. This is a gel type cleanser, which I usually prefer because I feel like they clean my skin better than a creamy cleanser. This type of cleanser can also dry out your skin easily, which is what I experienced. I learned that I need to use a mix of both types. There is also a creamy tea tree cleanser that The Body Shop offers, which I may try once I run out of this.
The moisturizer is really interesting and I mean this in a mostly good way. Here's what I like:
- It's cooling on the skin
- It mattifies your skin, which is great before applying makeup (i normally get a little oily throughout the day).
- You can layer this easily, I like this for my t-zone and then use a regular moisturizer for the parts of my face that are more dry.
- It sinks in really fast, you don't have to wait forever before you apply makeup on top of it.
The thing that I did not like about the lotion was that it dried out my skin really bad if this was the only moisturizer I used. I've never had dry skin before, but I did while using this. Now that I'm using this in conjunction with another moisturizer, my skin is fine, but yikes, be careful with this stuff!
The only product I was disappointed in was the regular Tea Tree Oil. Maybe I went into it with really high expectations, but I didn't feel like the tea tree oil was that effective. It seemed like my blemishes healed and faded away at the same rate as if I hadn't used any product at all. When you apply the oil to your spots, it has a really strong tingling sensation. The oil is really potent, but I didn't really see a difference. If you have used tea tree oil as a spot treatment, please let me know what your experience has been with it, I'd be really interested to see how it works for other people.
