2015 | Reading Recap

2015 | Reading Recap

2015 was a year of rediscovering my love for reading. For years, I took a break from leisure reading, which I learned was something I really missed in my life. After discovering the book blog and booktube communities, I was reinvigorated and inspired to jump into reading hardcore again. I also started talking about books here on my blog, which gave me a sense of accountability to finish books and tell you guys about them (until I started a business and all that went out the window). For today's post, I wanted to look back on the year and give you update on my goals from the beginning of 2015 and give a general overview of how my reading year went.

There were two major goals that I had for my year of reading: 1. Read 52 books by the end of 2015 and 2. Complete the POPSUGAR reading challenge. Both of these challenges have more details here in which you can see specifically which books I read throughout the year.

Let's start with the first. By midyear, I had already reached my goal of 52 books. Like I said, I was very inspired at the beginning of last year and really focused on making time for reading every day. I ended up bumping that goal up to 100 and though I was ahead of that goal for most of the year, I hit a major hiccup when I started my Etsy store. With that taking up most of my free time, I had little time for reading. Even so, I ended up rallying at the end of December and getting exactly 100 books read (thanks to the help of comics). Here are some facts about my reading this year (courtesy of Goodreads "my year of reading" feature):

I added 17 (!) books and 7 comics to my favorites shelf this year. My star rating break down looks like this:

37 - 5-star reads (16 comics, 21 books)
45 - 4-star reads (15 comics, 30 books)
16 - 3-star reads (6 comics, 10 books)
 2 - 2-star reads (2 books)

Clearly I enjoyed a lot of books this year. Although, now that I'm looking at the numbers and reflecting on the books that I gave them to, I may go back and adjust some ratings. There are a few high ratings that over time just don't hold the same value to me. Overall, I think I tend to rate books quite high, especially if I rate it immediately after completion - something to work on for next year.

Now, on to my POPSUGAR challenge. You can see all the books I read (and was planning to read) that fit into the categories here. I completed 41 of the categories, which left 11 unfinished. BUT, I learned a valuable lesson about myself with this challenge. I am much more of a mood reading that I thought I was. When it came time to start a new book, I wouldn't even consider the items on this list because it felt too constraining, even though I picked all these books myself at the beginning of the year. In reality, when I finished a book, I would stand in front of my shelf and pick up whatever jumped out at me in the moment. Because of that reason, any other challenge that I do that is similar to this one will be a loose guideline and only include books that I really want to read or already have sitting on my shelf.

Lastly, I wanted to just give you the full list of books I read. Many of these have reviews on my blog (you can see a full list of all the books I've reviewed here), so be sure to check that if you are interested in any of these titles. Stay tuned for more end of the year type posts, including my favorite books of the year and goals for this year.

I hope you all had an amazing holiday season! Thanks so much for reading and sticking with me this year!
